Experimental Design

There are a lot of definitions of design. The most academic one assumes that good design is an evenly laid kerb, a clear visual identification, a functional product. In our view, utility is not the only aim, but just a necessary introduction to designing. “We oppose the stability of objects, because the stability of an object triggers off the stability of its meaning and the stability of meanings causes the production of outdated objects”.

Marta Hryc

Designing jewellery is an important, although not the only, element of the education programme of the Experimental Design Studio conducted at the Faculty of Architecture and Design of the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk. The first-cycle studies (Bachelor’s degree) last six semesters, the second-cycle studies (Master’s degree) last four semesters and lead to a diploma in design. The Academy also provides third-cycle (PhD programme) studies in the field of design arts.

Observing carefully and often critically the world around us, we consistently deal with the interpretation of material culture in a broad sense, in all its marketing and sociological manifestations. Searching for experimental paths of development, we try to derive the strategies of operation from the analysis of a situation, and not the analysis of competition. The final effect of each task is a three-dimensional prototype taking into account the process of its implementation into limited or mass production, and an important stage of education: modern technology, respect for the material, perfect workmanship, attention to detail and recognizable original style. Trend-hunting is a significant research tool – a method of systematizing and continuously updating economic statistics, the psychology of consumer behaviours and contemporary liberal arts, whose proper interpretation allows us to understand and use operationally the mechanisms of coming into existence, the spreading and evolving of developmental trends, both global and local.
