23rd Legnica International Jewellery Competition CLASSIC

Exhibition at the very heart of the Legnica Jewellery Festival SILVER. Organized since 1979, the Competition focuses on the creative aspect of art jewellery, with the emphasis on idea and interpretation. This year an international jury composed of: Peter Bauhuis (Germany), Kai-Yin Lo (Hong Kong), Graziano Visintin, Sławomir Fijałkowski and Magdalena Kwiatkiewicz (Poland) judged 706 entires submitted by 308 artists of 42 countries. The exhibition presents over 50 works of the jewellery artists from almost 20 different countries, mainly from Europe, but also from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Japan, Korea and Taiwan.

Theo Smeets Jewellery

The exhibition of the newest works of the Dutch jewellery artist and designer,  graduate of Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, since 1998 professor at the University of Applied Arts in Trier, Gemstone and Jewellery Design Department in Idar-Oberstein, participant of numerous exhibitions in Europe, Japan and USA, laureate of many prestigious competitions.

Stephen Bottomley Orbit

Review of works of the Scottish jewellery artist, graduate of Royal College of Art (Great Britain) and Rhode Island School of Design (USA), lecturer and head of Jewellery and Silversmithing at Edinburgh College of Art, participant of numerous exhibitions and laureate of many awards. The Orbit exhibition is a result of his fascination with new kinds of metals, redeveloped by aerospace industry.

Daniela Boieri Unthought known

The presentation of the newest works of the Italian artist, graduate and teacher of ALCHIMIA Contemporary Jewellery School in Florence,  participant of over 20 group exhibitions in Europe, USA, Korea and Israel. Simplicity of “classic” forms and play with the space are features of this collection.

Katarina Síposová Contexts

Young Slovak artist, graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava (2013), participant of exhibitions in Slovakia, Czech Republic, Lithuania, Poland, Spain, Netherlands and Israel, presents the outcomes of her search for new ways of understanding jewellery through the attempts at reinventing a truly traditional jewellery piece - a pearl necklace.

Giedymin Jabłoński and Friends

The exhibition of the Polish jewellery artist, educator, curator, pioneer of numerous initiatives dedicated to artistic jewellery and amber in Poland. The presentation is enriched with works of Jabłoński’s friends from Europe (inter alia: Dawid Watkins, Karl Fritsch, Michael Petry, Judy McCaig, Wilhelm Tasso Mattar).

Antek Zaremski Jewellery

The exhibition of the graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź, member of the Goldsmithing Artists’ Association (STFZ), the representative of the youngest generation of the Zaremskis family (famous family of goldsmiths), participant of many exhibitions in Poland and abroad. His jewellery, seemingly simply and modest in means of expression, but in fact it contains multidimensional and full of surprises references to graphics, painting and architecture.

SILVER SCHOOLS

Annual presentation of the leading European art schools, showing works of their professors, graduates and students. This year the exhibitiors are:  the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk (Poland), the Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź (Poland) and The Glasgow School of Art (Scotland).

DEBUTS

The recurring presentation of the most promising Polish young artists, taking their first steps into the world of design and goldsmithing.

4Women Classic

Quartet 4Women (Weronika Bachan, Jolanta Gazda, Dorota Michalska, Martyna Tejwan) was formed by graduates of the private jewellery school “Antidotum Manufactory” in Warsaw. Martyna Tejwan’s works are conceptual but she also designs fashion jewellery, Weronika Bachan is an author of the bold and precise high-tech constructions, Jola Gazda makes folk-inspired shapes and Dorota Michalska creates eclectic collections.

Birthday Party 2

The jubilee exhibition on the anniversary of the 35 years of jewellery reviews in Legnica  presents works of the most recognized art jewellers, who were also once the jurors of Legnica Competitions. Over 40 artists from Poland and abroad take part.

Salute to Pinton

International exhibition devoted to the memory of Mario Pinton (1919 - 2008) – the great artist, jeweler and Nestor of the Paduan designers, who was connected with the Istituto Statale d’Arte Pietro Selvatico in Padua. He started a new jewellery designing trend called Padua School. Amongs Pinton’s graduates were numerous excellent Italian designers, including: Francesco Pavan, Giampaolo Babetto, Graziano Visintin. The works of 21 of the Mario Pinton’s students are presented at the exhibition. The chief curator of the exhibition is  Wim Vandekerckhove, owner of the Villa de Bondt gallery in Ghent (Belgium).

Vratislav Karel Novák - Artist and Friend

The exhibition devoted to the memory of Vratislav Karel Novák (1942-2014),an outstanding Czech artist, sculptor, jewellery designer, educator, promoter of contemporary jewellery, participant of many artistic projects in Europe, many times participant of the Legnica Jewellery Festival and a friend of Gallery of Art in Legnica, who passed away in February this year.

Alena Hesounová, Karla Olšáková, Kateřina Řezáčová i Lucie Houdková 4D

The project of four, young Czech artists, graduates of the Academy of Arts, Architecture, and Design in Prague.  They have been exhibiting together for several years now, on this occasion taking their inspiration from: flowers (Alena Hesounová), basic structures of life and their aestheticization (Lucie Houdková), logical order of repeated elements (Karla Olšáková), poetry and movement (Kateřina Řezáčová).

Plateaus Jewellery Project

The international project of: Patricia Domingues (Portugal), Barbora Dzuráková (Slovakia), Katharina Dettar (Germany), Edu Tarin (Spain), arises from the need of a new generation to define their position in an always changing world. According to the artists, the beauty of freedom enables them to cultivate the shape of future. By making jewellery they feel part of a continuous process. The exhibition prepared in co-operation of Marta Veludo, graphic designer.

There Will Be Blood

International exhibition organized by Piotr Rybaczek, who leads La Basílica Galería in Barcelona. All the works are related to the ambiguous symbolism of blood. The participants are: Attai Chen, Azahara Santoro, Bartosz Maria Chmielewski, Jacek Byczewski, Jie Sun, Karolina Bik, Małgorzata Kalińska, Märta Mattsson, Ming Gu, Momoko Tamura, Nicolás Estrada, Reka Fekete, Seul Gi Kwon and Walter Chen.

Amberif Design Award 2014 Materia prima

Exhibition presents works selected for the 18th International Competition for Jewellery Design with Amber organized by the International Fair of Amber, Jewellery and Gemstones Amberif in Gdańsk.

Mah Rana Meanings and Attachments

Photo exhibition - outcome of an artistic and searching project by the British artist, goldsmith, educator and curator, lecturer at Metropolitan London University. The assumption of the project „Meanings and Attachments” was to study the importance of owning, giving and wearing jewellery in different places and different cultural society throughout our lives. It was run in: Estonia, Spain, Portugal and Australia. Photographs presented at the exhibition are the result of activities realised in Legnica in March 2014. It is photographic and written report about inhabitants of Legnica and they jewellery.

Group AU+ 3 seconds down!

Group exhibition of the conceptual works by young Polish artists (Marcin Bogusław, Bartosz Chmielewski, Filip Jackowski and Michał Wysocki), alumni of the Wł. Strzemiński Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Łódź. It is the fourth new project of the AU+ group presented during Legnica Jewellery Festival SILVER.

Holownia

Exhibition of the works submitted to the 23rd Legnica International Jewellery Competition CLASSIC, but not selected for the main exhibition, Holownia offers a possibility to compare the verdict of the jury with the viewers own opinions. The exhibition presents several hundred of works by the participants from a few continents.

Silver Jazz

Tradicionally the concert closes the first day of the Festival finale. The guests of the 35th Legnica Jewellery Festival SILVER will be entertained by a great duet of multiinstrumentalists DUOLOGIA - Gruszecki&Smoliński

Boundaries of Global Art Classic in post-modern reality

In accordance with tradition the seminar shares its topic with the Competition (this year: CLASSIC). It is a forum for a debate not only about jewellery itself, but first of all about design and contemporary art in general. The speakers will try to address the question: what is regarded as classical and timeless today? The artists will present their own visions of classic. Presentation of the newest publications on contemporary jewellery written by Irena Huml, Andrzej Bandkowski and Jacek A. Rochacki will also take place during the seminar.

Silver Screen The Lord of the Rings: The Return of Silver

SSc is a cycle of screening of the films related to the topic of the Legnica International Jewellery Competition. This year the films topic is a broadly defined „classic”. The works shown include feature films, shorts, documentaries and experimental forms. Screenings take place every Wednesday during the Festival, from 7th May till 4th June. A special SSc projection will take place on the 17th May at 7.30 p.m.

Exhibition of photographs Photoclassics  

Exhibition of the photographs from an open-competition on different interpretations of the topic CLASSIC, ought to provoke a reflection and discussion on the timeless canons and values ​​in art. It was inspired by the following questions: do the universal codes that are irrespective of eras and fashions still continuously operate in art? How does contemporary art correspond with the tradition? Does the historical retrospection and reinterpretation of classical canons of art make sense and can it  be inspiring?
