Holownia
Holownia is an exhibition of works not selected for the 25th Legnica International Jewellery Competition CITY. Its name comes from the traditional and recognizable exhibition space – the hall of the Old City Hall.
Legnica International Jewellery Competition is the main event of Legnica Jewellery Festival SILVER, organized by the Gallery of Art since 1979. Being of a purely artistic nature, the Competition favours the idea, worth and sense of the artistic statement. Participating artists must submit works characterized by an original creative idea and a high artistic and technical level and referring to the competition’s theme. This year the theme was the CITY.
481 works were sent by 272 artists from 33 countries (the USA, Mexico, Brazil, Israel, Japan, Columbia, Korea, Egypt among them) to take part in this year’s Competition.
The participants were to present their own interpretation of the CITY. The topic was supposed to provoke a reflection and discussion about one of the greatest, oldest and longest-lasting achievements of human civilization. Is it also the last? How great is the cities’ power of attraction, what are these civilisation’s creatures, these (monstro)cities and what is the nature of their phenomenon?

Timothy Carson (Great Britain) – jewellery artist, graduate of Hereford College of Art and Design, Great Britain, and Epsom School of Art, Great Britain, currently a lecturer at Middlesex University in London,
Sławomir Fijałkowski (Poland) - general consultant of Legnica Jewellery Festival SILVER, for many years professor, dean of the Faculty of Architecture and Design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk, where he runs the Studio of Jewellery and Applied Forms Design,
Melanie Isverding (Germany) – jewellery artist, graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts Munich, Germany, Jewelry Department, since 2014 an assistant of prof. Daniel Kruger at the Jewellery Department of Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design in Halle,
Otto Künzli (Switzerland/Germany) - has been a lecturer in Canada, USA, Australia, New Zealand, and Europe for many years; professor at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich and visiting professor at the Royal Collage of Art, London,
Katarzyna Rzehak (Poland) - Creative Director of the Institute of Industrial Design in Warsaw - the oldest Polish institute dealing with design, art historian, critic of design and artistic jewellery.
Qualified works for the exhibition and awarded prizes. The exhibition of 25th Legnica International Jewellery Competition CITY can be seen at the Gallery of Art in Legnica, Pl. Katedralny 1, from 21st May till 5th June 2016. Visiting both exhibitions – pieces qualified for the exhibition CITY as well as Holownia – one can confront jurors’ decisions with one’s own views opinions.
