Action Collection

Action Collection is the first such extensive exhibition of art jewellery from the International Collection of Contemporary Jewellery that belongs to the Gallery of Art in Legnica, which also upholds over 40 years of tradition of the Legnica SILVER Festival. The dynamic development of the Festival was connected with the necessity to collect the most interesting works, presented and awarded in its successive editions.

The exhibition presents selected works from the collection of the Gallery of Art according to the curatorial choice of Prof. Sławomir Fijałkowski (Faculty of Architecture and Design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk), who has been a general consultant of the Festival for twenty years and have a direct influence on its shape and development.

Works on creating a collection of jewellery in the Gallery of Art began in 2004. Most of the pieces were acquired between 2013-2016 thanks to the grants from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. Currently, the Collection has about half a thousand pieces, which makes it one of the largest international collections of contemporary art jewellery in central Europe. It consists of objects that are works of the latest art, most of them created in the 21st century. These are both artworks awarded and honored during the International Jewellery Competition – the main event of the Legnica SILVER Festival – as well as presented at accompanying exhibitions.

Legnica Gallery's collection testifies the wealth of contexts, techniques, materials and ways of thinking about jewellery – from the speculation on the traditional understanding of ornamentation, through the medium of content, used to manifest the artist's views, to the work of conceptual art, in which the physical object loses its meaning to the idea. The International Collection of Contemporary Jewellery is an image and documentation of the possibility of using a piece of jewellery to communicate an artistic message. Its purely decorative aspect goes to the background, while it gains the status of an independent work of contemporary art. In the Legnica collection there are examples of the work of leading representatives of this trend – goldsmiths, artists and designers from almost all over the world.

The exhibition is presented on Instagram.

Action Collection project is co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage from the Culture Promotion Fund.

About the Festival

For more than forty years, the Gallery of Art in Legnica has been specializing in the promotion of contemporary jewellery and artistic objects made mainly of silver. The Jewellery Festival SILVER is one of the most important events shaping the cultural life of the region and building its image on the international forum. Every year we organize individual and group exhibitions of Polish and international artists, publish exhibition catalogues, organize conferences and symposia, as well as jewellery shows, workshops, debates and concerts. The most important event we organize is Legnica International Jewellery Competition which has a different theme every year.
