Legnica Jewellery Festival SILVER in 2022

The 42nd edition of the Legnica Jewellery Festival SILVER is getting closer. In May Legnica will once again breathe with silver, and the town's galleries and museums will be filled with artistic jewellery from all over the world. The event will include over a dozen collective and solo exhibitions presenting contemporary goldsmithing and jewellery art, as well as numerous on-site (workshops, guided tours) and online events (videos on the exhibitions, photo shoots with the artworks).

We invite you to the culmination of the Festival which will take place in Legnica on 13-14 May, 2022. The programme will include exhibition openings, meetings with artists, "Boundaries of Global Art" symposium, and – most exciting of all – the award ceremony of the 30th International Jewellery Competition TOUCH.

The event, organised by the Gallery of Art in Legnica, every year brings together a community of artists-goldsmiths, designers and lovers of artistic jewelry from all over the world. It is one of the most significant events of the jewellery sector not only in Poland, but also in Europe.

The most important element of the Legnica Jewellery Festival SILVER is the International Jewellery Competition, which continues to promote creative achievements in the field of artistic jewellery, as well as creative statements on the modern world challenges. The competition is dedicated to artistic jewellery designers – every year it gathers several hundred objects, submitted by participants from Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa, South and North America. Qualified works will be displayed during the main exhibition of the Festival at the Gallery of Art in Legnica. In turn, the non-qualified works will be shown at a separate Holownia exhibition, traditionally organized in the Old Town Hall. We encourage everyone to visit both presentations and confront the jury's decisions with their own views, opinions and assessments.

The topic of the current edition of the Competition is TOUCH – the sense inseparable from jewellery, which carries a special charge of intimacy and safety, but also – in the time of the global pandemic – fear and danger. As Professor Sławomir Fijałkowski, a long-term jury member of the Competition, explains: “This time – in the online era – we would like to refer to the feature that defines jewellery in its most material and – at the same time – the most sensual aspect. Let us invoke touch – the first sense through which we get to know the world, which gives us a sense of security, intimacy and trust. Jewellery worn on the body, coming into contact with skin receptors, provoking haptic contact, has always been the wearer's closest prop. We offer you a contemporary interpretation of this nostalgia in the hope that the objects of the most personal use will not be replaced by touch screens.”

The programme of this year's edition of the Legnica Jewellery Festival SILVER will also include solo exhibitions from the About the Artists cycle. The aim of the cycle is to present achievements of selected authors – both outstanding individualities of avant-garde goldsmithing as well as young designers demonstrating interesting creative attitudes. In 2022, Professor Andrzej Boss from the Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź will present his latest collection of hand jewelry, corresponding with "TOUCH" – the main theme of the event. Moreover, we will get introduced to the work of Felicia Mülbaier from Germany, who expresses her artistic sensitivity in sculptural jewellery objects and poetic sketches. The role of touch in the jewelery and more will also be explored by Justyna Stasiewicz, whose diploma collection dedicated to this issue will also be on display during the Festival. We will also present works by Alberto Dávila Quesada from Mexico.

Traditionally, we will give the floor to beginner artists - students of design and art. The Silver Schools exhibitions, during which higher education departments specializing in contemporary jewellery and design are introduced, have been accompanying the Festival for over 20 years. In 2022, we invited lecturers and students from the Faculty of Design in Metal at the HAWK University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Hildesheim (Germany). Meanwhile, Angelika Kwiatkowska, a graduate of the BA in Jewellery Design Studio at the Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź, will have her first solo exhibition. Her exhibition in the Debuts series is an award granted by the Gallery of Art in Legnica in the Władysław Strzemiński Project Competition organized by the Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź.

A retrospective review of artistic jewellery after 2000 will be provided by the exhibition of the International Collection of Contemporary Jewellery from the collection of the Gallery of Art in Legnica. A large part of the exhibition will consist of the works awarded during the Legnica SILVER Festivals. The exhibition will feature, among others, the jewelry awarded in the 29th International Jewellery Competition STILL HUMAN?, which have been included into the Collection in 2021. The exhibition will have its reflection online, where 3D models of selected works will be published.

As part of this year's Festival, the Association of Polish Goldsmiths will present a collective exhibition of over 100 works created by its members. The organisation has been bringing together Polish artists-goldsmiths and jewellery designers for over 30 years and promoting their work by organising exhibitions and competitions. Part of the exhibition will be dedicated to members of the Association who have passed away in recent years.

Moreover, visitors will have an occasion to see an exhibition of projects qualified for this year’s International Competition for the Design of Jewellery with Amber Amberif Design Award 2022: Amber as a reward!, organized by the Gdańsk International Fair.

The jewellery exhibitions will be accompanied by post-competition exhibitions of photographs and posters, the themes of which relate to the theme of the 30th International Jewellery Competition TOUCH.

We invite you to visit Legnica and participate in the culmination of the Festival. After a long, pandemic break, the return to meetings and the live discussion around artistic jewellery is particularly awaited by the jewellery lovers and makers.
